Waxed Canvas Care & Cleaning

General Care for your Waxed Canvas Item

Waxed canvas has many benefits (see Why Waxed Canvas), and requires special care to maintain its water resistant properties and appearance.

When new, waxed canvas tends to be quite stiff (depending on the item, and how it is constructed – by the time your item is made, it may have softened significantly) and softens with use and time.

As your item is used and softens, wax will wear away, and it is highly recommended that you re-wax your item about every year or so – depending on the item, and how much use it gets.

Daily Care:

Be careful not to leave your Waxed Canvas item in high heat or direct sunlight (such as in the car on a warm day) for any extended period of time.

  • The wax I use can re-melt at temperatures above approximately 120 degrees fahrenheit (48 degrees celsius)
  • The lining materials on my items typically are not waxed and can become darker or discolored if wax absorbs into them (this is not a bad thing persey – but some fabrics may appear stained if wax inadvertently leaks into them)
    • To prevent this from happening, keep your item away from temperatures above 110 degrees fahrenheit (43 celsius)

If your item gets spilled on or wet, dab liquid away with a dry cloth or paper towel.

  • Waxed canvas is great for repelling liquids and preventing heavy absorption of liquid, but it is not 100% waterproof. (see re-waxing if your item is losing its ability to repel liquid)
  • Hot liquids may melt wax and need to be cleaned up immediately. You may need to reapply waxed to any areas contacted by hot liquids.

Cleaning your item:

Never put your item in a washing machine and do not use detergent to wash your waxed item.

If light blemishes occur, first try gently wiping and dabbing the area with a damp cloth.

If blemish or stain persists use a soft  bristle brush to gently buff the area and spot clean using a damp cloth and gentle soap (such as castile soap).
